So often, the people who come to me are grappling with more than one thing at once, and finding that each is making the others harder to bear. Anxiety that is also compromising sleep; stress that has concretised into chronic physical tension; perimenopause symptoms that are making everything else harder to manage: these things compound each other, and this can be hard on the body. Reiki can help restore this energy, and many clients find that daily life feels more manageable and the weight of stress and burnout begins to lift.

I know from experience that anxiety rarely shows up as a single symptom. It can manifest in myriad ways: racing thoughts and restlessness, nausea, palpitations, dizziness or lightheadedness, breathlessness, even the fear of fainting; for many, women especially, it's intensely physical. And whether it's generalised anxiety, health anxiety, a panic disorder, or anxiety that's yet to be named, it can feel relentless and take a real toll on daily life.

I came to this work in part through my own search for relief from severe anxiety and depression. I know how distressing and exhausting they can be, and it is largely why I feel called to serve others navigating their anxiety and low mood.

You don't need to be going through something difficult to benefit from Reiki. Many clients come simply for deep relaxation, a reset, or regular time set aside for their own wellbeing. You may find yourself sleeping more deeply, feeling less reactive to stress, and moving through daily life with greater ease, often noticeable after a single session. For those seeking a more sustained shift, a series of sessions tends to help most.

Arriving & Settling In

Before you arrive, the treatment room is already prepared and I've already spent time connecting with Reiki. The space is warm, the lighting is soft, and the transition from your day to genuine rest has been made as easy as possible. Soft music plays if you'd like it; silence is equally welcome.

You remain fully clothed throughout, resting on the dedicated Reiki treatment table, so wear something comfortable and loose-fitting. Soft blankets and supportive cushions keep you warm and at ease. I begin simply by asking how you are feeling right now, and the session begins only when you are settled.

What You'll Experience

I begin with byosen scanning: a careful, deliberate reading of where in your body tension or imbalance is held. From there I work intuitively, allowing the energy to draw my hands to where they are most needed, placed lightly at specific points or held just above the body. Throughout, I am responding to what I sense in the body's energy field.

Most clients notice a shift within the first few minutes: a warmth, a heaviness, a quieting of mental noise. Many enter a meditative state during treatment. You don't need to understand the mechanism or hold any particular belief. You simply breathe, and allow. The work happens to you, not by you.

After Your Session

When the treatment ends, I'll help you gently return to full awareness. There is time to share anything that arose, ask questions, or simply settle before returning to your day. Most people leave feeling deeply relaxed, sometimes a little floaty, occasionally more emotional than expected. All of this is normal, and whatever arises is the right response for you.

In the hours and days that follow, clients often notice shifts in their sleep, their mood, or the way they carry tension. Some feel an immediate lightness; others find the effects arrive more quietly, over several days.

A Modern Stress-Reduction Therapy with Ancient Roots

Reiki is a Japanese energy healing practice developed by Mikao Usui in the early 20th century. The name combines two Japanese concepts: "Rei" (universal) and "Ki" (life force energy), representing the fundamental energy that flows through all living beings. In practice, a session involves light touch or hands held just above the body, working with the body's own capacity to rest, rebalance, and recover.

Reiki is now offered within NHS hospital trusts including University College London Hospitals and Guy's and St Thomas', and is acknowledged by Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Support as a supportive complementary therapy used in UK cancer centres and hospices.

Born in Japan in 1865, Dr. Mikao Usui was a lifelong student of medicine, psychology, and spiritual practice. In March 1922, after 21 days of fasting and meditation on Mount Kurama, he experienced a profound awakening and received the understanding of how to channel universal energy — what we now know as Reiki. Throughout his lifetime, he went on to train over 2,000 students before his passing in 1926, initiating a lineage of teachers that eventually brought Reiki to the West.

Today, I am honoured to carry on this tradition through my own practice, connected to Dr. Usui through an unbroken lineage of dedicated teachers.

How Reiki Works

During a session, I work gently across specific points of the body, hands placed lightly on or just above the surface, guiding universal life energy to where it is needed most. In the Usui tradition this is known as reiji-ho, and involves allowing the energy itself to guide the placement of the hands, rather than relying on a fixed sequence or conscious direction. The process supports the body's natural relaxation response and helps restore a sense of balance and ease.

Reiki is intelligent and highly adaptable: it can be administered through in-person sessions or distance healing, making it accessible regardless of location. The practice is entirely non-invasive, safe for people of all ages, and can even benefit animals.

Scepticism is entirely welcome. You don't need to believe in Reiki for it to be effective, and I will never ask you to. Many regular clients began as complete sceptics. Try one session, rest, and notice how you feel afterwards. There's no pressure, no commitment, and nothing unusual will be asked of you.

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. You remain fully clothed throughout. Avoid a large meal immediately beforehand. There's nothing else to prepare. Simply arrive, let me know how you're feeling, and allow yourself to rest.

Everyone responds differently, and there's no right way to experience a session. Some people feel warmth, tingling, or deep relaxation. Others simply rest quietly and notice the effects later, in better sleep or a calmer mood over the following days. Feeling little during the session itself doesn't mean nothing is happening, and there's no pressure to experience anything in particular. You simply rest, and allow.

Authentic Lineage

Reiki is passed from teacher to student in an unbroken line of transmission dating back to Dr Mikao Usui. This lineage honours the integrity of the practice and ensures the teachings remain authentic and true to their origins.

I received my Reiki training through Julie Hayes, an FHT member, whose lineage traces directly back to Dr Usui through William L. Rand, Hawayo Takata, and Dr Chujiro Hayashi. The full transmission is shown below.

William L. Rand studied with several Reiki Masters from different lineages: Diane McCumber and Marlene Schilke in 1989, Cherie Prasuhn in 1990, and Leah Smith in 1991. Studying with several teachers to deepen one's training was common during this period of Reiki's development in the West.

I'm Thomas, a holistic therapist, Usui Reiki practitioner, and practitioner member of the UK Reiki Federation. I came to this work largely through my own experience of seeking support during some very difficult times. That experience gave me a refined sensitivity to what it feels like to be held with care and presence.

As a client and spiritual seeker, that search is ultimately what brought me to Reiki. Through meditation, introspection, and guidance from seasoned practitioners, I encountered the healing and nervous-system regulation that's possible when someone is truly met with the approach they need. These experiences continue to shape the sacred space I hold for every client.
